The Mighty Weed Garden

When I moved into our home last Fall we inherited a lot of gardens, way more than I have time to maintain, but they are beautiful. They are a bit overgrown, but I haven’t worried too much since most will be removed and sold.  We need boy running room, and right now, a few are getting trampled.

I also inherited a massive veggie garden.  I think it is a bit big for us, but we haven’t had time to down size it yet.

This spring when we  had a warm spell in March, which is usually cold here, weeds start popping up in my veggie garden.  We got a cold snap, and it hindered some of our plants, but not the weeds.  By the time I was ready to work on it, I had this:

Mama's Mighty Weed Garden!

Some of those weeds were bigger than my baby!!
After a lot of work of pulling the weeds
After a lot of work of pulling the weeds
It isn’t perfect, but it was a lot better, I have been pulling as I go, but it seems like every day they pop back up.  They really love this fertile soil we have.

I have planted the veggies, and fruits.  I have sticks marking the rows, so far, I am growing weeds.
Pumpkin Sprout
B2s Pumpkin
At the store, we found these little kits for growing plants with your kids.  My middle son wanted a pumpkin, he keeps saying he wants to eat pumpkin.  He gets very disappointed when he sees this.  He calls it a weed and tries to pick it.  It may not ever grow into a pumpkin.
B1s Sunflowers

Since I told our oldest we were going to have a garden, he has said he wanted sunflowers!  One of our neighbours has sunflowers, he is very jealous.  So when we saw the kits, and there was a sunflower kit, we snapped it up.  He is over the moon with his sprouts!  “Mommy!  Look there are my sunflowers! They are GROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWING!”

This and weeds are all I have so far.  But if I can get some pumpkins, and sunflowers, I will count that a victory for year 1 of the veggie garden!

Do you grow veggies of your own?

@Gingermommy – thanks it was a lot of work, but we have a few things starting to sprout so we are happy!

If I didn’t have to get my hands dirty I might garden…but since even those pretty gloves leak, no I don’t grow veggies.  I just hit my Mom’s house and raid her greenhouse – then I make something fabulous and share it back :)

@ashleystone7 – That works!  I have a 5 yr old boy who hates getting his hands dirty too, so he mostly stands over me with garden gloves on pointing to which weed I should pull!

Oh that looks nice!  I would love to have a garden – but I live in a building.  Maybe one of these days!

That looks awesome! I’m doing my backyard this weekend, I’ve done the front and all the weeds are gone, lol. I would love a garden if I had a green thumb. I tend to kill plants and not on purpose at all, I’d love to go in my backyard and get a tomato or a head of lettuce, I’m jealous of all you that get to!

  5. We grow some veggies – this year so far it’s mint and basil in pots :)

I TRY to keep my plants alive, but I am not good a remembering to water them, and I am even worse at the “weed vs plant” game and usually end up pulling out things that should have stayed in the garden!

    1. Shari knitwitshair says:

@_littlemisskate – Yeah, I tend to err on the side of leaving things, so I end up with beautiful full weeds growing and then I have to pull it once I know it’s a weed! haha.  I had one growing in my planter pot, and hubby and his cousin were laughing at me.  Once I realized for sure they were right, I pulled it.  I then went and got some seeds and planted something.  My hubby thought it was a weed and pulled it.  I still pick on him about that.  I left the pot empty for the rest of the year too, and when people would ask I would make him tell the story.

  7. That’s very good work done. All we know that by posting this much helpful things really encourage us.
