Prepping for Day Surgery

My oldest son is going to get tubes put in his ears, and have his adenoids removed on August 13, 2012.  We have done all the usual stuff, like getting the ear tests done, prescreening, medical and all the necessary medical hoops.

We were told that we are to go to the hospital 2 hours before the surgery, and we can be there up to 8 hours after surgery for observation.  I am not sure how he is going to feel, but if he isn’t entirely exhausted, he may get bored just laying there.  I wanted to have lots of options for him from various levels of engagement.

Items to bring for day surgery
Some small items: Stickers, drawing
pad, matching game, Pack of cards,
metal springy, and a new car

So what I have come up with is to make up a hospital kit.  What am I going to put into his kit? Well I am going to share that here:

The type of surgery he is having he can’t eat a lot after, so I will bring some juice, and a pudding in case they don’t have anything he likes (my kids don’t like jello!!! Can you believe it?).  Also I am going to load an iphone full of music in case his ears are too sensitive to the loud noises around him or he just doesn’t feel up to anything at all.  He can lay and listen.  I will bring a charger, and ear phones to go with that.

I am bringing crayons, and a colouring book we already had.

I then got a duo-tang, and printed off some fun things.  I was told to check out TLS Books, and did a print out to practice writing, and do some reading readiness.  This is a great resource for teachers, homeschoolers, or mom’s who want to have their kids practice at home.

My friend Multi-Testing Mommy sent me a link to Educational Colouring Pages to print out some colouring pages for my son.  They have such a huge list, you will find some that your child will love.  She also sent me to this page that has educational activities.

When I was young I use to love doing those games with just a pen and paper.  We could do those no matter where we were because we could always get someone to pass over paper and a pen or pencil.  Multi-Testing Mommy also sent me this link: Traveling Games

Another idea I had was to Make a Scavenger Hunt type game of things he would find in the hospital.  I had a group of blogging buddies help me think of some awesome things for the list!

Here is what we came up with:

Cartoon Scrubs, Crutches, A nurse with a sticker, A balloon, A get well soon card, Vending Machine, A wheel Chair, Dr. Oh, Tim Hortons, Elevator, Pay Phone, Magazines, Bathroom, Stethescope, Blood Pressure Cuff, Heart Monitor, Teddy Bear, Guide Dog, Flowers, Baby, Ambulance, Big H sign, Needle, Mop, Band Aid, Volunteer, Snack Machine, Big Plant, Hand Sanitizer, Newspaper Box, Recycling Box, Picture on the Wall, Plaque, Crossword Book, Crayons, Cast, bicycle, Rubber Glove Balloon

The other thing I came up with was a journal of sorts.  I would ask him questions, and then he could write the answers.  He could fill them out in the hospital, or at home later, depending on how he is feeling.  Here are the questions myself and some friends come up with:

My favourite part of being at the hospital was
When I was at the hospital I saw

When I was in the hospital I felt

When I was in the hospital I met
After my surgery I felt
My favourite thing I did at the hospital was

Who was your favourite person at the hospital?
Would you like to grow up to be a nurse or doctor? Why?

What was your favourite food to eat after surgery? Why?

What made you feel better after your surgery?
The coolest thing I saw was

Many people have told me that he probably won’t want to do anything, and I am fine with that.  If I did all of this and he uses none of it, then that’s ok.  But I would rather have things prepared in case he does feel up to it.

Plus I tried to make sure he could do some things ahead of time, since we have to wait 2 hours before the surgery.
