Seriously, where did summer go? Not to sound like my Paw Paw or anything, but back in my day, summer=June, July, and August!
I headed out with my three year old a few days ago to pick up a few odds and ins. Our first stop was Michael’s. (Please link-http://www.michaels.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-Michaels-Site/default/Home-Show?countrycode=US.) Now, I love Michael’s as much as any mommy/teacher/party host/crafter could possible love a craft store! But as we perused the aisles, my son quickly made a few observations. “Look mommy! Santa masks!” Um, ok, it is July and there are foam Santa masks on an end cap. Forget it kid, no Santa masks in the middle of summer. A few aisles over, “Creepy skeletons Mommy.” That’s right! Halloween decorations are masterfully displayed right around the corner. I disappointed him by letting him know that we would NOT be purchasing Halloween decorations three months early. I will be honest though and say that with this dreadful heat, seeing the fall flowers and leaves in the floral department were a welcome sight. The pumpkins? Not so much! I’m just not ready!
Next stop-Party City! (Please link-http://www.partycity.com/) We all know Party City does Halloween year round, so I was prepared. But did you know they also do Back to School? I had no idea! They have a small section for college bound students and fun things for kids, too. Who knew? That was not most shocking for me though! We moseyed right passed the holiday section filled with Hanukah and Christmas decorations, gift-wrap, costumes, etc. I had been to Michael’s so I felt a little more ready than the shocked passer byers. We waltzed right passed the turkey basters and cornucopias. After all, we just needed a few party favors. That’s when it happened. I could not believe my eyes-the employees were putting up the Mardi Gras (Please link-http://www.cityofmobile.org/mardigras.php) 2013 supplies! WHAT? I happen to be from Mobile, Alabama-home of the very first Mardi Gras parade-and I know for a fact that it is a little too early to start the revelry fun! Parades will begin in January next year, and yes, that is a little early, but I am just not ready for that either!
I guess I need to face the facts. The retail market is running my life. They are telling me what to buy when, or at least they are trying. They (oh yes, they) are dangling sparkly must have items in front of my face. Those items are smiling and winking as if to say “buy me now or you’ll never see me again.” Those items are right, too. If you don’t buy it now, it may very well be gone. But guess what? That’s ok with me……..well, most days!
Are your local stores pushing out the holiday goods, yet?
